When cores need a special finish or configuration, Appleton engineers deliver productive and effective solutions. Over the years, we’ve proven that no core finishing requirement is too complex or too small. From custom core cutting machines to custom core finishing solutions, Appleton Mfg. Division can provide the perfect solutions to meet your exact production needs.
Examples of Solutions:
- Dado Notching - Through notching to generate an area for wind-up and unwind equipment lugs to engage with the core. Dado saw blades are incorporated into a machine designed to control the cut, dust and provide operator safety.
- Dado Bridge Notching - Sensitive web products often cannot tolerate an interruption in the smooth OD of the core. The Dado Bridge Notcher puts a notch in the core ID, leaving a bridge over the notch.
- Die-set Notching - An alternative to Dado Notching, the Die-set Notcher punches a through notch in the wall of the core. A slightly more expensive tool, but one that minimizes dust.
- Burnishing - Appleton fixed knife cuts are already burnished, eliminating much of the need to burnish cores. We provide equipment that generates a chamfer on the ID to provide for piloting and seating winding equipment chucks.
- Crimping - Core ID and OD can be resized by crimping the core on Appleton Crimping equipment. This is often done in preparation for inserting a metal cap.
- Capping - Appleton has built equipment to insert, expand, crimp and stake metal caps or inserts to fiber cores.
- Plugging- Need to insert a plastic or wooden plug prior to putting your core on the winder? Appleton has experience in performing these operations automatically.
- Printing- On-machine core identifiers make it easier for the winder operators to load each set properly. Appleton can ink-jet print core length, set number, and set sequence information.
These systems can be simple stand-alone machines that treat one end of the core or they can offer enhancements that facilitate fully automated integration into a core finishing line.
